Positioning FM as a key player in driving decarbonisation through the supply chain
Our Scope 3 research project emerged from the understanding that existing whole-building carbon assessments often overlook FM-related emissions, leading to incomplete carbon calculations for buildings. This oversight minimises the full environmental impact of buildings and reduces the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives beginning from the design phase. We saw an opportunity to address this gap, positioning FM as an essential driver of decarbonisation.

Working with committed FM providers, we developed our ‘Scope 3 Framework for FM’, released in 2023. The framework provides a standardised approach for measuring Scope 3 emissions in FM.

Progress to date
Stage 3: What’s involved
Launching in early 2025, this 12-month research initiative equips FM companies to lead the way in Scope 3 research. Building on the success of our Scope 3 Framework for FM, this next stage invites a wider group of organisations to shape the development of an advanced Scope 3 emissions tool. The 3 key goals for the project are to:
- Develop a bespoke online scope 3 tool: With our data partner, Datore, we’ll create a tool to measure customer emissions, gain insights, and enhance business performance.
- Industry benchmarking & metadata insights: Provide data to benchmark service-level carbon, helping guide participants on their net-zero journey.
- FM-specific emission factors: Build tailored emission factors for the FM industry to support benchmarking and drive operational efficiency.
