What are science-based targets?

Science-based targets (SBTs) are greenhouse gas reduction goals set by companies that align with the level of decarbonisaton required to keep global warming to 1.5°C.

Developing ambitious carbon emission reduction targets is now a crucial part of any company’s long-term sustainability strategy and transition planning. Setting science-based targets is seen as a significant step for companies to align their operations with global climate goals as well as position themselves as leaders in responsible and forward-thinking practices.

What is the SBTi?

The SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative) is the global body enabling businesses to set science-based targets. Established in 2015, it is a partnership between the CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). It is one of the most popular methodologies for committing to and setting science-based targets.

Our science-based targets services

Setting science-based targets is a complex process. We can help guide you through it from commitment to progress reporting. Here are a few of the ways we can help with your SBTs:

  • Awareness & upskilling – We facilitate workshops to help sustainability teams and senior leaders understand the business benefits of setting SBTs and having a net zero pathway for investors, clients and colleagues.
  • Feasibility studies – We crunch the numbers, including those all-important scope 3 emissions to model current carbon performance against proposed target options and reduction initiatives.
  • Alignment of net zero strategy with SBTs – We align your Net Zero and near-term emission reduction strategy to match SBTi’s near term and/or Net Zero pathways.
  • Setting your targets –  We calculate achievable and ambitious targets and develop a thorough implementation programme for how to achieve these. Once set, we submit your targets to the SBTi for validation and support this approval process.
  • Progress updates – We create tailored templates for sharing your advancements with key stakeholders, including investors, the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and customers.

Setting science-based targets is a complex process, consisting of 5 key stages – commit, develop, submit, communicate and disclose. This guide will walk you through what’s involved at each stage and how we can support companies through the process.

“Working with Acclaro on our SBTi target setting and submission simplified the whole process for the team. In particular, the collaborative approach followed was extremely valuable when managing such a complex project. I look forward to gaining target validation and continuing our journey towards net zero”
