Client: Global IT Services Provider

A leading IT services provider operates a global portfolio of strategic data centres where ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certification is more than good practice — it underpins the permit to operate, customer contracts and legal compliance. The client needed to maintain accreditation across the portfolio, stay ahead of current and forthcoming environmental and energy regulation, and do so without placing additional burden on busy onsite operational teams. Acclaro provided ongoing oversight of both management systems, ensuring certification was maintained, compliance was assured and delivery remained resource-efficient.

Key outcomes

  • ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 accreditation maintained across the global data centre portfolio, protecting the permit to operate and customer commitments
  • Full legal compliance sustained, with forthcoming regulation identified and planned for before it took effect — avoiding compliance issues and last-minute remediation
  • Identify, evaluate and quantify energy performance projects, delivering measurable ROI for management decision-making and supporting accurate CDP disclosures.
  • A resource-efficient delivery model that placed no additional burden on onsite teams, keeping their focus on operations
  • External audits passed consistently, with findings managed and closed through a structured, repeatable process
  • Clear visibility for the business of what certification and compliance mean commercially — from permits and contracts to regulatory exposure

The challenge

For a global data centre operator, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 carry significant commercial weight. Certification is embedded within customer contracts and expectations, supports regulatory obligations, and, in practical terms, forms part of the organisation’s licence to operate. Losing accreditation — or falling short of legal compliance — would create direct business risk through contractual exposure, compliance failures, and reputational damage with both customers and regulators.

Maintaining that position across a global portfolio presents a complex challenge. Environmental and energy legislation varies considerably between countries and continues to evolve, requiring compliance to be managed as an ongoing process rather than a one-time exercise. The client needed visibility of emerging regulatory requirements early enough to assess impacts, plan responses and implement changes proactively, rather than reacting during audits or compliance reviews.

Adding further complexity was the need to establish a consistent global management system while accommodating diverse local legal, regulatory and operational requirements. The challenge was to create a common framework, governance model and reporting approach that could be applied across all regions, while retaining the flexibility needed to address country-specific obligations and compliance risks.

At the same time, onsite data centre teams remained focused on delivering reliable operations. The client needed its environmental and energy management systems maintained to certification standard — including documentation, compliance evaluation, internal audits and continual improvement activities — without diverting site teams from their core responsibilities or building a large internal compliance function.

What Acclaro delivered

Acclaro provided ongoing oversight of the ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 management systems across the client’s strategic data centre portfolio, acting as an extension of the team. Our work included:

  • Management and maintenance of the ISO 14001 environmental and ISO 50001 energy management systems, keeping documentation, objectives and processes audit-ready year-round
  • Legal compliance evaluation across the portfolio, confirming compliance with current environmental and energy legislation in each jurisdiction
  • Horizon scanning of forthcoming regulation, assessing what changes would mean for each site and building compliance plans ahead of enforcement dates
  • Performance data analysis and insight generation, monitoring environmental and energy performance across the portfolio, identifying trends, benchmarking sites, and highlighting good practice that could be adopted across the wider estate to drive continual improvement.
  • Internal audits and management reviews, identifying and resolving issues before external assessment
  • Lead management of external certification audits, acting as the client’s primary point of contact with certification bodies, coordinating the audit process, responding to auditor enquiries, and managing findings and corrective actions through to closure.
  • A resource-efficient delivery model — Acclaro carried the compliance and management system workload so onsite teams could stay focused on operations, engaging them only where their input was genuinely needed

The impact

The result was sustained certification and compliance across the portfolio, delivered with minimal internal effort — protecting the client’s  permit to operate while freeing operational teams to focus on running the business. Acclaro also provided independent oversight of facilities management activities, ensuring the management systems were implemented consistently and robustly across every site, while improving the quality and reliability of environmental and energy data to support evidence-based decision-making at senior leadership level.

Through its work with Acclaro, the client achieved:

  • Continued ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 accreditation across the global data centre portfolio, protecting the permit to operate and the customer contracts that depend on it
  • Sustained legal compliance, with no compliance issues arising from missed or misunderstood obligations
  • Early visibility of forthcoming regulation, allowing changes to be planned and budgeted rather than reacted to
  • Consistent external audit performance, with a structured process for managing and closing findings
  • Minimal demand on onsite teams — compliance and certification maintained without diverting operational resource
  • Stronger governance and accountability, with independent oversight holding facilities management teams to account and ensuring robust implementation and maintenance of the management systems across the portfolio.
  • Improved data quality and reporting, providing trusted environmental and energy performance data that enabled evidence-based decisions and more effective management at senior leadership level.
  • Minimal demand on onsite teams, with compliance and certification maintained without diverting operational resource.
  • Greater business confidence that environmental and energy obligations are under control, now and ahead of regulatory change

“ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certification isn’t optional for us — it’s written into our customer contracts and underpins our permit to operate. Acclaro carries that responsibility as if it were their own. They keep our management systems audit-ready year-round, lead our external certification audits, and spot regulatory change early enough that we can plan for it rather than react to it. Crucially, they do all of this without pulling our data centre teams away from running operations. The independent oversight they provide has strengthened our governance and given senior leadership data we can genuinely trust. With Acclaro, compliance is something we have confidence in, not something we worry about.”
