Client: Global Technology Company

Our client is a global technology organisation specialising in digital transformation, cloud computing and cybersecurity, with more than 200 sites and data centres worldwide, delivering services ranging from consulting to managed services across industries including healthcare, finance and government. Facing growing pressure from investors, customers, regulators and ESG ratings agencies, the business needed to unify its sustainability activities and move beyond fragmented, reactive compliance. As a long-term partner of more than a decade with board-level visibility, Acclaro became an integral part of the client’s sustainability delivery team — applying systems thinking to transform fragmented processes into a strategic ESG framework that improved performance, strengthened governance and enhanced stakeholder confidence.

Key outcomes

  • A comprehensive ESG strategy tailored to business needs, embedded into the core of the business and supported by key stakeholders across the organisation
  • Improved performance in leading ESG ratings, strengthening investor and customer confidence
  • Reduced cost of managing environmental responses through a coordinated, systems thinking-based approach, removing siloes and double counting
  • ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 implemented across strategic data centres, with compliant reporting under UK ETS, EED Article 12 and MCPD
  • Sustainability embedded into strategic decision-making, with forward targets and transition plans agreed at senior level
  • Validated near-term Science Based Targets (SBTi), committing the client to achieving its sustainability goals by FY2030
  • Scope 1, 2 and 3 GHG reporting established with third-party verification, ensuring accuracy and transparency of reported data
  • Internal capability built through upskilling workshops, enabling the client to manage ESG reporting independently

The challenge

As a global technology business operating more than 200 sites and data centres across multiple regions, the client’s sustainability activities had developed in a fragmented way — spread across regions and functions, with limited integration of ESG data, systems and governance. At the same time, the complexity of ESG reporting and disclosure requirements was increasing, spanning regulatory obligations, investor frameworks and corporate reporting standards.

That fragmentation carried real commercial consequences. Investors, customers, regulators and ESG ratings agencies were all raising their expectations, putting pressure on the business to improve its ESG ratings, strengthen investor confidence and demonstrate credible climate action. Duplicated effort and siloed responses were adding cost without adding value.

The business needed a unified, strategic approach to ESG — one that could bring consistency across a complex, fast-moving global organisation, satisfy the demands of multiple reporting frameworks, and connect sustainability to long-term value creation rather than treating it as a compliance exercise. A particular challenge was reporting Scope 3 emissions, a complexity compounded by the client’s fluctuating global real estate portfolio, which made it difficult to maintain a consistent emissions baseline.

What Acclaro delivered

Acclaro worked with the client as a long-term annual partner for more than a decade, becoming an integral part of the sustainability delivery team with board-level visibility and applying systems thinking to evaluate challenges and drive results. Our work included:

  • Oversight of the ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 management systems for strategic data centres, ensuring robust environmental and energy management at the client’s most critical sites
  • Annual GHG footprinting across 200 global sites and a changing property portfolio, giving the business a reliable emissions base to report and plan against — covering Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions with third-party verification, including Scope 3 data collection from the client’s top 12 suppliers and partners, and built into business operations to enable near-time reporting and forward planning
  • Engagement with facilities and data centre teams across 20 countries to collect and verify emissions data — prioritising high-emitting data centres and developing a robust methodology for estimating emissions from lower-priority activities
  • Regulatory and investor reporting — including S&P DJI and MSCI — alongside corporate reporting standards such as CDP, SASB and GRI
  • Climate risk identification across operations, building a clearer picture of exposure and resilience — including a detailed climate risk report for investor requests and a summary sustainability report highlighting progress towards ESG goals
  • A detailed gap analysis assessing customer expectations and alignment with public reporting frameworks, identifying and addressing gaps against global best practices and investor expectations
  • Use of leading ESG rating platforms — EcoVadis, Sustainalytics and ISS — to evaluate and monitor sustainability performance
  • Engagement with senior management on key frameworks, including TCFD and SBTi, enabling the development of forward targets and transition plans and embedding them into the business
  • Upskilling workshops delivered across all organisational levels, with key insights and findings presented to senior leadership — building the internal capability to manage ESG reporting independently

The impact

The result was a shift from fragmented compliance to strategic ESG leadership, with sustainability unified across the business, governance strengthened, and ESG positioned as a driver of performance, resilience and long-term value.

Through its work with Acclaro, the client achieved:

  • A comprehensive ESG strategy tailored to business needs, enabling the organisation to respond effectively to investor reporting requirements
  • Business-wide stakeholder engagement behind the strategy, embedding ESG into the core of the business
  • Reduced cost of managing environmental responses through a coordinated, systems thinking-based approach — with fewer siloes and less double counting
  • Improved performance in ESG ratings— with marked and sustained improvements on platforms such as EcoVadis and CDP enhancing stakeholder and investor confidence
  • ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 implementation, with compliant reporting under UK ETS, EED Article 12 for data centres, and MCPD
  • Streamlined reporting and disclosure across key frameworks, improving climate reporting maturity and reducing compliance costs
  • Validated near-term Science Based Targets with the SBTi, committing the client to achieving its sustainability goals by FY2030
  • Validated GHG reporting across Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, with third-party verification ensuring accuracy and transparency, underpinned by a flexible, scalable reporting structure that can adjust as operations evolve
  • Independent ESG management and reporting, with internal teams now capable of producing accurate, reliable sustainability reports aligned with global frameworks
