Summary
Acclaro Advisory was commissioned to support the identification of prospective clients to trial Ipsum Energy’s innovative technology which allows the fingerprinting of electricity consumption from appliances, measured through a non-obtrusive meter. We identified five organisations to trial the technology taking the sites through to installation, and engaged with DECC as part of the smart metering criteria to describe how the technology can operate in the UK market. Ipsum has benefitted from a managed entry into the UK market at both customer and Government level, together with an understanding at a policy, organisational and facilities perspective.

Project Info
The lack of granular level energy data has been highlighted as a significant problem in the provision of accurate benchmark information for use by organisations and the ability to forecast energy consumption at design stage.
IPSUM Energy have developed a unique approach to fingerprint the electricity consumption of appliances which can be measured through the use of a non-obtrusive meter. The power of this data enables organisations to understand local energy consumption and changes how energy management is delivered.
IPSUM empowers customers to change their energy consumption behaviour by giving guidance, triggers and positive feedback based on continuous real-time, accurate insights of your energy consumption. Human behaviour has one of the biggest impacts on energy consumption. Therefore, influencing this behaviour is critical to achieving and maintaining the savings through a continuous awareness program around your energy consumption.
Acclaro Advisory was commissioned to support the identification of prospective clients to trial the technology. Our main activities involved:
- Initial identification and briefing of prospective clients in the UK that meet Ipsum Energy’s requirements
- Arrangement of meetings progressing towards agreement for the clients to progress with pilot studies
- Liaising with Government to understand forward policy implications on the Ipsum technology
- Provision of a forward timeline and tailored programme for each client based upon their specific requirements to demonstrate the pilot study a success
- Liaison with pilot sites and IPSUM as a single point of contact prior to installation and through the process to resolve any issues and maintain client expectations
- Work with the pilot sites on customer interface requirements – what data do they want, presentation etc
- Developing simplified processes to streamline the systems
A number of benefits were provided to help IPSUM understand the UK market at a policy, organisational and facilities perspective.
- Engagement with DECC Smart Meter team and SPAD to describe the context and how it can operate within the UK market
- Identification of five organisations who provided a pilot site for the installation of the IPSUM technology and supported the trial. Each organisation supported the potential to roll-out the technology to other sites when successful
- Understanding of the gaps in the UK metering approach, where limited information available on electricity consumption from the distribution board
